4 Ways to Create Positive Synergy in Team Meetings

  • Make the conversation about data.
After the chit-chat has finished, it’s time to make it clear that we’re getting down to business. One of the best ways to do that is to get the numbers flowing as soon as you can. All the data related to the conversation should be discussed here. Emotional and opinionated talk should be discouraged and put aside in favor of empirical discussion. This pushes everyone towards a data-driven mentality. It makes people use the numbers discussed to justify their points of view later in the conversation.

If you can, present some visual cues of the importance of data by using Zoom’s screen sharing feature and displaying charts and graphs that are relevant to the discussion.

  • Steer towards inclusivity.
Now you have started to see embers. It’s time to breathe life into them so that they may transform into flames. At this point, make sure that the conversation is as inclusive as possible. Do not allow people to dismiss each other’s ideas, and make sure that you are as attentive to all of them as possible. In short, make everyone feel that their voice has been heard. Even if an idea sounds objectively weak, try to expand on it for a moment. If all else fails, just acknowledge the idea and move onto the next one. The idea is to make people feel as much a part of the conversation as possible.

  • Build consensus through win-win thinking.
The most productive meetings have some form of consensus between their attendees. Working towards a consensus involves trying to engage everyone in a similar mindset. Yes, humans are humans, and because they’re humans, they’ll have a confrontational and competitive nature. There’s nothing wrong with healthy competition as long as the end goal of collaboration and compromise comes first. In a team effort, everyone has to be on the same wavelength. It might actually take you a few meetings, but you can accomplish this as long as you try as much as you can to create environments in which people can come up with win-win situations in every possible occasion.

  • Find common ground.
It’s inevitable that you will reach a point of entropy, where conflict will overtake the discussion. It is at this point that you should actually avoid going into “damage control” mode as much as possible. If you want to solve the conflict, backing down is only going to make things worse. Instead of trying to quell things, focus on trying to find common ground. Elevate yourself above the rest of the voices and be assertive. Then, once you have everyone’s attention, attempt to find where the dissent comes from. After that, discover every point where everyone is in agreement and pick it up from there.

Once you’ve finished quelling the conflict, you should then try to work with the naysayers to see whether they are spotting a potential issue with what’s being discussed. Sometimes, they’ll spot something that could cause deep problems with the goals you’re trying to accomplish. Listening to negative input doesn’t hurt!

Five Ways to Balance Business and Life Goals

  • Get help as soon as you can
When you start a new business you will rightly work extra hard to make it a success, however as soon as you are able to afford assistance without sacrificing profits, then hire someone even if that someone is a virtual assistant. Extra help will free you up to handle bigger tasks and knock off of work early to recharge your batteries.
  • Flexibility
Rome wasn’t built in a day and your business won’t be either, simply realize that there is more to life than working all the time. Build in time for your family, yourself and family activities instead of finding more excuses to work. Keep your schedule somewhat flexible to account for any changes that may happen.
  • Communicate
Keep your family in the loop about what is going on with business, if you need help from them, then ask. Make sure that you make decisions together as much as you can, so that no one misunderstands what is going on. Even though it is your business enterprise, it is a family concern in many ways. I always sit down with my wife on a Monday morning a tell her what I have planned for the week, she does the same with me and we both take into account the time we want to spend with each other, this helps us keep business and life in balance.
  • Use time wisely
Time management is always important, even if you don’t own a business. While the week is mostly for work related goals, let the weekends mean family oriented goals. Adjust your schedule to take off a Friday now and then for a long weekend getaway with the family. When you are working, divide tasks to get everything done in the allotted time frame and learn to manage your time better and schedule and prioritize the tasks that need to be carried out.
  • Always Enjoy Yourself
If you are not happy with your life or with your business, then nothing you do will matter all that much. You won’t be motivated in either area. Does the business seem to be sucking you dry? Take a new perspective on your goals, change the business or get out of it. The same goes for your life. Making changes can lead to more fulfillment and success, life is simply too short not to get pleasure from it.

1. Amazon
2. Chick-fil-A
3. Nordstrom
4. Trader Joe’s
5. Apple
6. Costco
7. Lexus (Toyota)
8. Acura (Honda)
9. Chipotle
10. L Brands

Five Tips for Creating a Positive First Impression

It doesn’t matter how large or small your business, whether you work from home or an office at some point in time you’re going to have to attend a business meeting, an event or even a social function. One of the best ways to do well, at these meetings or events is to focus on creating a positive first impression.

Research the Audience
Every type of meeting usually has a specific audience type that will go to that meeting. If it’s a more universal meeting, research the people that you want to connect with that might attend. Know some facts about them and how they got their start, they’ll be impressed that you took the time to get to know them before meeting them.

Dress Appropriately
It’s always a good idea to find out what type of clothing people will be wearing to the meeting or event. The more you can fit in due to your mode of dress, the more people will remember you in a positive way. Dress for the position you want is a good refrain, but be careful about the “power” suit or appearing too high above your audience because you want them to remember you and not have them leave thinking you’re stuck up and full of yourself.

Quirkiness can also be a good thing, provided you don’t take it to far, I personally love shoes and I often wear shoes that others notice, or a piece of clothing. This can draw people to you and help break the ice, so give your dress some thought.

Be First

When it comes time to introduce yourself, the person who puts their hand out first and states their name and gives their 30-second introduction is often the person who holds the power in the meeting. You should also be first to introduce the person you just met to others as they approach. This makes you seem very important and people will remember you more due to your kindness and thoughtfulness.
Ask Open Ended Questions

Most people are a little nervous at events or meetings but if you ask each person you meet open ended questions about themselves and their business, they will be put at ease. And oddly, the more people get to talk about themselves, the more they will remember you. An open ended question is one that must be answered with a sentence instead of a yes or no answer.

Listen Actively
As you meet people and ask those questions, truly listen to their answers. Repeat back to them their name and the things they say in your own words, then ask them good follow up questions. This will make you seem like the most interesting person at the meeting or event because you are actually listening, and people so rarely listen. And as you repeat things back to the person you’re conversing with, it will also help you remember more about each person that you connect with.

One final way to create a positive first impression is by what happens after the meeting, always follow up with those whom you met. Use the information on the business cards you collected, or find them online, and connect with them in a new way. Send them a thank you card, or cut out an article and send it to them, or find a creative way to connect with them outside of the meeting. This will make you a truly memorable connection for them.

There is no more B2B or B2C: It’s Human to Human, #H2H

It used to be that marketing was segmented into two categories; business-to-business (B2B) or business-to-consumer (B2C). This was done (I assume), to separate specialties, audiences and segments in an effort to more highly target the groups of people who ultimately would consume a brand’s message.

What it really did, however, was create an unnatural language for marketers – with words like “synergy” and “speeds and feeds” – to tell the stories of products to their buyers and partners. It’s become like one massive game of telephone, where by the time a message gets to the person actually buying the product, the things that make it special have been swallowed by marketing vernacular.

Consumers are confused. Why can’t we make it simple for them to understand what we’re selling, to share their experiences and the value they felt with others? More importantly, why is it that what we’re marketing most often does not align to actual consumer experiences?

The fact is that the lines are so far blurred now between the two marketing segments that it’s hard to differentiate between the two anymore. We all need to think like the consumers we are, putting ourselves in the mindset of the buyer instead of trying to speak such an intensely sophisticated language full of acronyms and big words, in order to sound smarter.

Marketing increasingly strives to become one-to-one, with solutions to collect and wrangle the big data about us to serve up more personalized offers and experiences. On the other hand, social has become a more public and vast medium, where the things we share skyrocket quickly to a “one-to-many” experience. The dichotomy between marketing and social has actually flipped… and it’s out of balance. Social and marketing need to work together to personalize individual conversations, as well as deliver shared global experiences that crowds of common values can benefit from. This is what our social and digital mediums have gifted us, and how humans interact and feel more compelled take action.

So, this is how I see it:
Businesses do not have emotion. People do.
People want to be a part of something bigger than themselves.
People want to feel something.
People want to be included.
People want to understand.

But people are also humans, and with that comes mistakes. Missteps. Failures. As humans, it’s in our nature to say the wrong thing, get embarrassed, and not realize the consequences of our actions. The rise of social media has given a digital platform to the dark side of anonymity, both as individuals and as crowds. I say it’s time to lay down the virtual pitchforks and torches and bring this behavior back into balance. The delightful side of humanity holds with it empathy, understanding, and forgiveness, and when remembered in our communication, it ties us together as a common group.

Communication shouldn’t be complicated. It should just be genuine and simple, with the humility and understanding that we’re all multi-dimensional humans, everyone of which has spent time in both the dark and delightful parts of life.

That’s human to human. That is #H2H.

No necesariamente necesitas a alguien exitoso.
